Call for proposals: Reducing emissions in commercial cooking

IPEC is delighted to be supporting Westminster Council in their innovation procurement exercise to invite innovators to submit a proposal to trial their solution that can help reduce the emissions in commercial cooking.

About the Commercial cooking project

Air quality in Westminster continues to be a significant environmental challenge, affecting the health and well-being of residents, workers, and visitors. Emissions from commercial cooking are contributing to harmful PM2.5 pollution. PM2.5 refers to tiny particles in the air that are small enough to travel deep inside the lungs, heart and brain. They can lead to serious long-term health conditions such as heart disease.

A key challenge is tackling the issue of PM2.5 emissions associated with commercial cooking, accounting for over 60 % of PM2.5 emissions in Westminster. Westminster Council is taking action to address this problem, by inviting organisations to submit a proposal about their solution and how it can address the challenge and how it can be piloted for up to 12 weeks in a local commercial kitchen and potentially scaled.

The Council has been engaging with local businesses interested in being involved in the pilot to test the awarded suppliers’ solutions. More information on the business engagement can be found here Commercial cooking project | Westminster City Council.

The Procurement

This is an exciting opportunity for innovators to test their solution in a live, urban, commercial kitchen and demonstrate measurable change in PM2.5 emissions. A maximum of £100,000 is available to fund this project. The Council may award up to 3 suppliers equal amounts, or the award may vary depending on the value and benefits of the trial.

Successful applicants have the opportunity to:

  • Be at the forefront of sustainable business practices in Westminster.
  • Help improve air quality for employees, customers, and the wider community.
  • Work closely with industry experts and council teams to create workable solutions that fit your needs.
  • Develop a pilot that will enable them to test and prove their solution in a live environment

Submissions are due by 2pm on Friday 29th November 2024, with the contract period set to run from December 2024 / January 2025. If you have any further questions, you can ask these via Westminster Procurement portal (see link below).
