Project title
Public procurement for a just, net zero transition
Summary
The UK devotes about a third (£300 billion) of public spending to procurement yearly, with only £559 million allocated to net zero contracts. Leveraging procurement for a just, net zero transition is vital, but integration remains limited. Innovative public procurement is crucial for supporting inclusive and sustainable growth, especially crucial amidst climate emergencies. Post-Brexit legislation opens opportunities for local authorities to access capital for net zero investments, fostering job creation and social value.
This project aims to explore how innovative procurement can aid local net zero transitions, using examples like electric vehicles and housing retrofits. Case studies from regions like the North East will unveil challenges and opportunities for both local authorities and SMEs, highlighting the role of place-based net zero projects in fostering social value.
